My line of 4 by 4" Farm Animal paintings, mostly cattle, sheep, goats, the occasional chicken, horse and donkey. Backgrounds are brightly painted in pink, yellow, lime green, blue, purple and more. Available through me and on occasion through Helen Painter at the Halifax Seaport Market, Helen makes and sells a line of whimsical greeting cards and she can be found at the seaport Market most Saturday mornings.

I was up on the dykes for the morning and as the fog burned off I retreated to the willow trees by the pond where Dawn was working on her paintings too.

Three More Herefords and At The Rock Garden and 2 more are part of the show, NSAC: An Artist's Perspective, opening Thursday August 11 at the Marigold Centre, 7 pm, 605 Prince Street in Truro. the show runs until August 31 and is open Monday to Friday. 11 artists, all members of the Truro Art Society, painted on site at the Nova Scotia Agriculture College Open House in July, and the NSAC hosts this show to showcase the work of that came out of that day and also includes several pieces representing agricultural themes previously painted.

Wild Cat of Burncoat

During our last visit to Burncoat Park on the motorbike, we were greeted by this handsome orange male tabby cat as we picked our way down the stairs and along the rocks. He seemed quite at home entertaining the evening visitors.
Painting in the rock gardens on July 21 was a warm experience with the temperatures and humidity a bit high. This photograph depicts some of the lovely views along the pathways in this treasure of a garden. Watch for the upcoming show at the Marigold Centre in August. Opening night is August 11, the theme is Agriculture and the NSAC is sponsoring the event.

Nova Scotia Agricultural College Open House

Thursday July 21 I am part of a group of people painting at the NSAC grounds in Truro. In conjunction with their open house ( http://nsac.ca/openhouse ), 11 artists will be set up and painting in the Garden at the NSAC, 10 am to 2 pm, and we will have a few small items for sale as well as what we are working on if ready that day! Some of us paint really fast...and I hope to also have a few of my 4by4 animal paintings and some other animal art.
Following the paint out in the garden, the NSAC has booked the Marigold Centre's Art Gallery for a show of work by the 11 artists during August. Most of us will probably have 3 to 4 pieces in this show and the theme will be agriculture and perhaps some work will reflect the morning spent in the garden as well. Opening for the Marigold show is August 11 at 7 pm, all are welcome.

A busy art weekend, 2 openings to attend on Friday night and we got to the Grand Opening of "Copper Fox Gallery", 4092 Highway 359 in Halls Harbour. "At Burncoat Park"

This painting continues my recent series revolving around the landscape along the shoreline at and near Burncoat Park. It has found a new home and this photo was taken as it is currently displayed.

This is a busy week for many local artists. Opening Friday May 6 in Truro is "This Is Me" the Region 6 Visual Arts Nova Scotia show with over 24 artists from Colchester, Cumberland and East Hants Counties participating. The show runs the month of May at the McCarthy Gallery, 36 Arthur Street, NSCC Truro Campus. Opening reception is Friday May 6, 6:30 pm, after that Mon to Fri 9 to 4 and Sat 1 to 5.

Also on Friday is the Grand Opening of the Copper Fox Gallery in Hall's Harbour way up beyond Kentville in the Annapolis Valley. Copper Fox Gallery is owned by Fabienne Leydecker, a fabulous painter and she has been working furiously for several months to meet the opening deadline. There are over 20 artists with work in the gallery, and opening month features "Bloom With A View" to celebrate spring. The Chicken Coop is the quaint colurful folk art gallery and housed in a separate building. The main gallery has 3 showrooms.

Copper Fox Gallery is at 4092 Highway 359 Halls Harbour and opening reception is May 6, 4 to 8 pm. After that it is open daily 9 to 7.

GREAT LITTLE ART SHOW

The Avon River Heritage Society presents this art show each spring at the Avon river Heritage Museum in Newport Landing. It is a fund raiser for this group and many artists from Hants County and further support this show by entering their work for sale throughout the weekend.

The show runs April 15 to 17. Hours: Opening April 15, 7 to 9 pm, April 16, 11 to 5 pm and April 17, 11 am to 3 pm.

I have 6 pieces entered in this show, one pastel, and 5 acrylic paintings. I have included landscape, the building next door, a few cows and of course there has to be a horse! Prices for my work are $100 to $450.

Here are 2 pastel drawings that were matted together. The cats are "Adam's Cats", and each image is about 6" high. I often work in chalk pastel when painting and drawing small portraits of cats, dogs and horses. The paper is Canson. These cats are quite young and slender, they are so tiny compared to my own cats who are much older.

Bert had a great life. We are sorry to lose him. His sister, Cleopatra and his housemate Dusty will miss him.

Opening Day at Gallery 215 in Selma was June 13. This community Gallery is housed in the quaint Selma Cultural Centre near the Cobequid Bay. It represents nearly 60 artists and I work there several days a week. In July we are hosting the Cobequid 4H Photography Club members show. Our feature artists for July are Ann, Jay and Kyrie Hume, Norma McDonell, Sina Wagner and Susanne macLachlan.
Every Thursday in July and August is 'Art Talk Thursdays'. from 10:30 to 12:00 join us for informal chats about art, bring some work to critique, maybe see a demo or just have a coffee.
In August I will be teaching 2 workshops, Pastels for beginners, and Learn to Draw and Paint Animals. Judy Arsenault will be teaching a 2 part Drawing course on August 6 and 13.

Since March 6 I have taken a small booth to the Halifax Farmers Market in the Brewery Market, Halifax. It has been an interesting month, getting up at 4 am each Saturday morning and driving into town in order to be there by 6 am. The Market opens to the public at 7 am and occasional day vendors, such as myself, often have a different space each week. The market is a fascinating place, a lovely old building with a rabbit warren of rooms and courtyards and hallways filled with farmers and artisans displaying their wares for the customers. I am displaying several paintings each week along with "Animal Art" zipper pulls, switch plates, ornaments and more.

Truro Art Society has been hosting demonstrations every Friday at the McCarthy Gallery during the current show, fanTAStic. On Friday March 19 I was one of the artists demonstrating for the afternoon. I chose to do some drawing with chalk pastel, and of course, my subject would be a horse! It was fun, thank you to all who showed up and it has been a wonderful 2 months of fanTAStic Fridays!

This my latest Chalk Pastel, "The Horse On The Off Side". It is chalk pastel on Canson paper, the smooth side, and it is about 10 by 14. I worked on this on January 31 for most of the day. This horse is one I saw a couple years ago in the pulling ring at the Annapolis Valley Exhibition in Lawrencetown. It was an overcast day, had rained hard the night before and it rained again after I packed up the cameras and headed for home. This horse was huge, a Belgian, and he had such a lovely face with such a gorgeous eye. The pulling horses are very interesting to observe. I usually paint them in oil or acrylic, but the lighting on that day felt like pastels were the ticket.
This work is in the "fanTAStic" show, up now at the McCarthy in Truro.

These are my friends Dot and Dash. I have known them since they were youngsters, although they are only a couple years old now. They are very friendly and happy with a great Terrier attitude towards life.
This is my Dad, Ernest and my favourite horse, Mabi. This photo was taken in probably 1987 while I was in university studying Photography, among many other courses. We often had to shoot up to 10 rolls of black and white 35mm weekly and I usually returned home on weekends to prowl around the neighbouring farms and convince my Dad, my favourite model, to pose for numerous photos. Mabi was mostly Thoroughbred, a show hunter, dressage horse and Pony Club mount and one winter my friend Jill and I broke him to harness and hitched him to a sled. That was interesting. We all survived. Even the sled. My Dad's saddle was Western so he was tacked up Western on this particular January day, 23 years ago. Mabi and Dad had many adventures, perhaps they still are.

On the left is a small painting of an Ox, titled "Year Of The Ox". It is acrylic and was painted in 2009, the year of the Ox. This painting is 6" by 8". It was originally part of RURAL ROUTES, the 2 person show with Pamela Swainson from August of 2009.
On the right is a sample of "Animal Art". This grey horse is a Christmas tree ornament and measures approximately 3 1/2 by 4 inches in size. It is cut from Pine that is grown on my family's wood lot, and painted with acrylic paint. Animal Art is a line of animal themed gift ware and jewelery that I have been producing for many years. Animal Art is priced from $10.95 and up, this particular ornament retails for $15.95. It is available through me or at several gift stores and galleries.

I am hosting an OPEN HOUSE November 28 and 29. Everyone is welcome to join me that weekend from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at 8443 Highway 215 in Maitland. I will be featuring paintings from the Broken Horses; Spotted Cattle show and Rural Routes. As well there will be several new small landscape paintings and a few still life. And of course the ANIMAL ART wooden products scattered throughout the show rooms.
I am taking orders for custom Animal Art and Portraits.

Hantsport's Paint The Port

September 13 was Paint the Port in Hantsport and it RAINED all day! This after over 2 weeks of glorious September sunny, dry weather. The painters were few but determined and we all produced some work even with the inclement weather. Porches, verandas, beach umbrellas and cars provided shelter. This painting is 8" by 16" "Hantsport In September" and it was purchased at the silent auction.

Next event for me is Paint The Port in Hantsport on September 13, 2009. This is a 'paint the town
sort of event, with a display of dry paintings and then as completed the wet paintings are added to the artist's display area in historic Churchill House. Each artist has a display area of approximately 8 by 4 feet and there will be up to 20 artists painting for the day around the small town of Hantsport in the beautiful Annapolis Valley. The public is invited to browse through the Gallery and to visit the artists as they paint on site for the day. Dry paintings are for sale at a fixed price and the wet paintings are available through silent Auction or " Take Away" price.

This painting is called "One Barn, One Tree, Three Horses". It is 12" by 24" and acrylic on canvas. It is part of RURAL ROUTES, and that show is up at the Fraser Centre in Tatamagouche until September 1.
This painting is from this summer, and I think it illustrates the tentative move I have been making towards an interest in painting the landscape.

Rural Routes, with paintings by myself and Pamela Swainson opened July 31 at the Fraser Cultural Centre in Tatamagouche. There was a small but boisterous crowd on hand on a very warm evening to take in the energetic and colourful paintings in watercolour, oil and acrylic. The volunteers with the Fraser were kept busy pouring the wine and putting up Red Dots as several paintings were quickly grabbed up by friends and admirers of the work.
Many thanks to all who attended and worked to make this show happen.
The show is up until Sept 1 and open daily 10 to 5 pm Sundays 12 to 4 pm.

This is ON THE RUN, an acrylic painting, 16 by 8 inches and will be part of Rural Routes when it opens on July 31 at 7 pm at the Fraser cultural Centre Gallery. I have 10 new paintings in this show and just as many from 2008. Pamela Swainson, my cohort in this endeavour will have a similar number of new work to show. We invite everyone to the opening and to stop by the show any time over the month of August. The Fraser is at 362 Main Street in tatamagouche and is open Mon to Sat 10 to 5 and Sun 12 to 4. The building also houses the Visitor Information Centre and a small gift shop.

This painting is called "Take A Good Look". It is oil on canvas, 40 inches by 30 inches. It will be in RURAL ROUTES, and until then is at Gallery 215 in Maitland. This painting and several others were inspired by some horses I saw while visiting relatives in Maine in 2007. This was a Quarter Horse, used as a school horse and show horse, patiently standing around on a hot afternoon in a pipe corral.

Working towards Rural Routes

Rural Routes, the show with Pam Swainson and myself opens on July 31 and we are both working frantically to finish work for this show. I will have several new paintings to unveil that night including, One Barn, One Tree and Three Horses; Bright and Lion ( a diptych); The Smiling Cow; Calf Across The Road: Outstanding In Their Field; and a few others. As well I will be showing several works from last year's Broken Horses, Spotted Cattle.
Pam will have several new works as well.
All are welcome to attend our reception July 31 in Tatamagouche at the Fraser Cultural Centre Gallery. 7 pm.

Paint the Park

Truro Art Society hosted Paint The Park in Truro, Nova Scotia yesterday, June 27. The event was held in Truro's Victoria Park all day Saturday, with a meet and greet Friday night. A wonderful event and lots of fun had by participants. Joy Laking provided an entertaining description of her plein air adventures with demonstration of her painting gear on friday night in the TAS tent. And the rain was chased away by sunshine for the entire weekend, making Saturday a complete success for all the artists. There were several adventures and misadventures, much interaction with the public enjoying the park's walking trails, lots of good food, and several of the we paintings were sold. Many thanks to all the members and friends who made this a wonderful bonding experience.

Paint The Park

This weekend Truro Art Society is hosting an event, Paint The Park, in the Victoria Park, Truro, Nova Scotia. Participants will paint all day Saturday in the Park and there will be an auction of the wet paintings and a sale of previously finished work. June 27, Victoria Park, Truro, Nova Scotia. All are welcome, rain or shine. There is a tent to display work in and areas for artists to paint rain or shine. I am not sure which 2 of my finished paintings I will display. Have to have a horse or cow in there somewhere!

It is a wet, windy and wild day here in Nova Scotia. The light is not the best for painting but I have several canvases to prepare. I am looking towards the Rural Routes show at the Fraser Cultural Centre and some oxen who need to find their way through my paint.

Well, in attempting to delete one photo and add another, I seem to have deleted the entire post. No huge loss.
This painting is one called Chariots On Fire, 24" by 36", oil painted in 2008 as part of my series "Broken Horses, Spotted Cattle" that was shown at the McCarthy Gallery, Truro, Nova Scotia. This painting is now owned by Utata Gallery and is part of their permanent collection.
I am currently preparing for a show in August at the Fraser Cultural Centre in Tatmagouche, Nova Scotia with another artist, Pamela Swainson. The show is called "Rural Routes". Our work has a strong connection to rural Nova Scotia, and the farming communities that exist within the beautiful countryside.
